Trimble External Antennas for Geo Explorers

There are several external antennas that can be used with the different Geo Explorers models and versions (XT vs. XH).

  • Tempest antenna (this replaced the older Hurricane model) compatible with the Sub Meter Geo XT’s. There were 2 versions of the Tempest:
    • The original Tempest antenna for L1 GPS only (released October 2009 – Part Number 57973-00).
    • The 2nd version of the Tempest antenna was also L1 GPS and added Glonass compatibility (released January 2012 – Part Number 57973-10).
    • This antenna works with the following XT models: 2005, 2008/3000, Geo 6000 and Geo 7x
  • Tornado antenna is compatible with the Sub Foot Geo XH’s.
    • This antenna is L1, L2 GPS and Glonass compatible.
    • This antenna works with the XH models: Geo 2005, 2008/3000, 6000 and 7x series.  Granted the 2005, 2008/3000 Geos are GPS only and adding the Tornado antenna will not add Glonass reception to these Geo’s internal receivers.
  • Zephyr2 antenna is compatible with the Sub Foot & Centimeter Geo XH
    • This antenna is L1, L2, GPS and Glonass compatible.
    • This antenna works with XH models: 2005, 2008/3000, 6000, 7x.  Only the Geo 6000 and 7x have the option to receive Glonass satellites.
    • This antenna is also the only one compatible with the “Centimeter Geo 6000 and 7x series”.  The Centimeter Geo 6000 and 7x models are compatible with TerraSync Centimeter Edition only.

Notes:

  • See Page 44 of the Trimble MGIS Compatibility List for more details about compatibility of these external antennas with Trimble MGIS data collectors.
  • The GPS satellites transmit signals on two carrier frequencies. The L1 carrier is 1575.42 MHz and it has both the status message and a pseudo-random code for timing.
  • The L2 carrier is 1227.60 MHz and is used for the more precise pseudo-random code.
  • What is GPS?  This is the American Global Positioning System, a satellite constellation operated by the U.S. Department of Defense.
  • What is Glonass?  This is the Russian Satellite constellation operated by the Russian Federal Space Agency.
  • For more information on GPS and Glonass see this GPS book “GPS: The First Global Navigation Satellite System”.

Cable options:

1. The standard Trimble antenna cable is a 1.5 and or 5 meter in length and looks like this:

2. There is also a 1.5 meter “Rugged” external antenna cable.  Request this when ordering vs. the standard 1.5 meter cable above if you work in an area where the thinner cable might get caught up on objects.  It can be ordered in longer lengths if needed.  The Rugged external antenna cable looks like this:
